Rockets open eyes with easy win
BLOOMINGTON — Anybody wondering if the Rochester John Marshall/Lourdes girls hockey was for real, got more evidence of it Tuesday in the Rockets' non-conference game with Bloomington Jefferson/Kennedy.
The Rockets blasted the Jaguars in the non-conference road game 6-0. Jefferson/Kennedy was coming off an impressive 4-3 win over No. 3-ranked Hopkins on Saturday.
JM/Lourdes improved to 10-1-1.
The Rockets got big scoring games from Rebecca Freiburger with three goals, and Tori Thompson with two. Renee Saltness had four assists and Brooke Hansen two.
Jaguars goalie Mara McClain had 41 saves. JM/Lourdes goalie Melissa Zinser needed to stop just 16 shots.
"This was a very impressive win," Rockets coach Bob Montrose said. "Jefferson is a very good team. We watched them play Dodge County early in the season and they have really improved since then. Our girls are playing very well right now and that showed tonight."
Montrose was impressed with Freiburger.
"She plays the game with a lot of grit and skill and that combination puts her among a select group of players in the state," he said. "Her and Renee Saltness have been an outstanding offensive duo for us so far."
It was JM/Lourdes' fifth shutout win in 12 games.
