HAYFIELD — In an early-season battle of Hiawatha Valley League softball powers, a quick start helped the Hayfield Vikings top Rochester Lourdes 6-3 on Monday at Hayfield.
The Vikings (1-2 overall) scored all six of their runs in the first three innings, building a 6-0 lead after three.
Lourdes (2-1) scored three times in the top of the sixth, but couldn't generate any more offense.
Carrie Rutledge led Hayfield — the three-time defending Section 1A champion — was led by senior Carrie Rutledge, who went 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs. Jaelynn Therring also homered for the Vikings, and Caitlyn Hendrickson pitched a complete game, allowing three runs on seven hits.
Lourdes was led by Ashley Krom (2-for-4) and Clara Radloff (double, two RBIs).
