Rochester John Marshall grabbed an early lead, then held off a late surge by rival Rochester Mayo for a 4-3 victory in a Big Nine Conference softball game on Tuesday at Mayo High School.
JM scored three runs in the top of the first and never trailed.
Mayo rallied with single runs in the second, fifth and seventh innings, but JM pitcher Amber Prow got key outs when she needed them. Mayo put two runners on base with one out in the seventh, but couldn't get the tying run across.
Haley Jochum led the Rockets, going 3-for-4. Kristen Erickson and Katie Boldt each had two hits for JM.Prow also pitched a complete game. She earned the victory by allowing no walks and striking out seven hitters.
Mayo's Madeline Dostal was 2-for-2 with an RBI and two runs scored. Mackenzie Paulson suffered the loss. She pitched a complete game and struck out five batters.

"We had our opportunities, but couldn't quite finish," Mayo coach Clint Thome said. "We played a very good JM team and we played them tough. That is all I can ask for from my players. Hopefully we can play well down the final stretch of the regular season in preparation for the section tournament."
