AUSTIN — Hayfield scored four runs in the first inning and that was more than enough to secure the Section 1A West subsection softball crown.
Hayfield built a big early lead and won 5-0 over Blooming Prairie in the 1A West final at Todd Park.
Hayfield set the tone in to top of the first inning with a great defensive play. Hayfield center fielder Alexis Dudycha went to the fence and robbed Blooming Prairie's Elly Strunk of a two-run homer.
Hayfield (16-5) qualified for the section final four tournament and will play the 1A East champion, Chatfield or Wabasha-Kellogg, at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Todd Park.
Blooming Prairie (10-11) followed this game with a 10-4 win over Waterville-Elysian-Morristown to stay alive in the tournament. The Blossoms will also play at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Todd Park.
