Softball: Stewartville nips Lourdes

Caitlyn Hughes threw a three-hit shutout to outduel Karrie Virgin as Stewartville nipped Lourdes 1-0 in Hiawatha Valley League softball on Monday.

It was the second game of the day for Lourdes, which had beaten Pine Island 3-0 early on Virgin's two-hitter.

Hughes struck out 13 in guiding Stewartville to victory. She was also 2-for-3 with a double at the plate.

Stewartville's Jena O'Bryne drove in the game's only run in the top of the sixth inning.

Virgin struck out nine and walked one in taking the hard-luck loss.

"We played the best game of the season and Karrie Virgin had her best game by far this season," Lourdes coach Becky Macken said. "She was stellar in the circle. If we can play this way moving into the sections, I'll be very pleased."
