RIVER FALLS, Wis. — The Rochester Mayo boys came in second out of 16 teams in the River Falls Extreme Meet at UW River Falls.
"This wasn't your typical cross country meet," Mayo coach Brett Carroll said. "There were four areas throughout the race where they went through a river and up muddy banks."
Mayo senior Riley Macon won the race by 15 seconds, with Christian Leitner of Red Wing second.
"Ryan Pewowaruk, Ben Cole and Zach Klein were JV runners for us last year and they came into the season in great shape and were the difference makers for the meet today, placing so well," Carroll added.
The Mayo girls were ninth as junior Jackie Bannon was the top Mayo finisher followed closely by rookie eighth-grader Lindsey Greenlund. Two other new runners to the team who helped out were eighth-grader Kathy Hillier and seventh-grader Kacey Ericson.
