Stingers secure weekend sweep of Honkers

The Rochester Honkers suffered losses on Saturday at Sunday.

On Saturday night, the Honkers got off to a slow start and it led to an 8-3 loss to the Willmar Stingers at Mayo Field.

The Stingers scored three runs in the first and two in the second and never looked back.

Christopher Scalisi (Redlands) went 2-for-3 to lead the Honkers offense. Danny Pardo (Montevallo) went 3-for-4 with a run scored to lead the Stingers.

David Worrell took the pitching loss for Rochester. Worrell went four innings, allowing four runs on five hits, while walking three and striking out four. The Honkers used five other pitchers to close out the game.

Former local product Troy Traxler (Minnesota) walked in a run for an RBI and also had a stolen base. Joey Czarske (Cal State Northridge) added a double and a run scored.

Sunday was more of the same for the Honkers. They fell behind early and never recovered, dropping an 11-3 decision to the Stingers at Mayo Field.

The Stingers again jumped to an early lead, scoring four times in the first inning. The Honkers tried to come back, scoring twice in the second. But the Stingers put the game away with a seven-run sixth inning.

Miles Lewis (North Dakota) led the Honkers, going 3-for-4 with a run scored and a stolen base. Scalisi smashed a two-run home run, and Alex Fitchett (Hawaii) added a solo blast.

Clayton McGinness (Wichita State) took the loss on the mound. He went four innings, allowing four runs on seven hits, while walking two and striking out three. Sam Bjorngjeld (Tulane) got roughed up in the sixth, allowing six runs on one hit and five walks. As a staff, Honkers pitchers surrendered 11 walks against the Stingers on Sunday.

The Honkers, who are off today, sink to 5-14 overall and they sit in eighth place in the Northwoods League's North Division. They return to action Tuesday at Eau Claire (12-8).
