Section 1A qualifiers: In singles, Rochester Lourdes’ sophomore Marjan Veldic is the No. 2 seed and Winona Cotter senior Ian Modjeski is the No. 5 seed. Veldic beat Modjeski 6-4, 6-1 in the section final. Veldic is 15-2 overall, Modjeski 15-4. Modjeski also reached state as a sophomore.

In doubles, Rochester Lourdes senior Jonathan Onigkeit and junior Freddie Suhler are the No. 3 seed. Lourdes juniors Ethan Leeser and Easton Blissenbach are unseeded. Onigkeit/Suhler beat Leeser/Blissenbach 6-4, 6-1 in the section final. Onigkeit was a state runner-up along with since-graduate Thomas Eckel in 2019. There was no state tournament last year due to the pandemic. This is Onigkeit’s third trip to the individual state tournament.

The favorites: Breck’s Clayton Haberman is the No. 1 seed in singles. He is 16-4 overall. Haberman has been ranked No. 1 in the state all season. Veldic has a strong chance to meet him in the finals. He is the No. 2 seed and is ranked third in the state. No. 2-ranked Charlie Huttemier of Waseca lost 6-3, 6-4 in the Section 1A semifinals to Cotter’s Modjeski.

In doubles, the top seed is Breck senior Ishan Nadkarni and junior Zach Piehl. The No. 2 seed is St. Paul Academy seniors Liam Lynch and Luka Shaker-Check. Nadkarni is ranked No. 4 in the state in singles. Shaker-Check is ranked fifth.

Thursday’s action: First-round play in singles and doubles begins at 8 a.m., with quarterfinals at noon. Singles are at St. Cloud Tech. Doubles first round is at St. Cloud Apollo and quarterfinals at St. Cloud Tech.

Friday’s action: Semifinals are at 8 a.m., finals and third place at 11:30 a.m. for singles and doubles. All of it is at St. Cloud Tech.
