Volleyball addition eagerly awaited

The Rochester Amateur Sports Commission is very excited about the addition to the National Volleyball Center.

This addition will provide four additional courts and support areas that will enhance current events and open up opportunities for new events that previously could not fit in Rochester. Rochester Park & Rec anticipates that construction will start later this summer and be completed before the fall season starts in 2011.

Volleyball is one of the fastest-growing sports on a regional and national level. USA Volleyball is the major national sanctioning body in the Midwest and membership has grown to over 15,000 athletes & coaches with North Country Region (Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota) of USA Volleyball in recent years.

Volleyball events have also continued to grow. One local event that continues to grow is the Rochester Cup Volleyball Festival. The number of teams has increased from 32 in 2004 to 92 in 2010. The growth of this event can be attributed to quality venues, good competition and the support of many from the community. Teams from Rochester and southeast Minnesota will compete against teams traveling in from Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin and South Dakota. The Rochester Cup will be held at the National Volleyball Center, UCR Regional Sports Center, Century High School, Mayo High School and Dover-Eyota High School on May 8-9.

Our staff is also reviewing volleyball events that now may be interested in coming to Rochester. There are opportunities in regional qualifiers and other USA Volleyball events as well as hosting training sessions for one of the USA Volleyball Junior or Adult National teams.

Some of these events are not great fits for Rochester due to event size and/or financial challenges. Many of the training sessions require the host city to provide complimentary lodging, transportation and training facility. As you can imagine, this would not create a good financial situation for the Sports Commission or the City of Rochester.

However, we will continue to work with USA Volleyball to see if a good fit can be identified that works for both USAV and Rochester.
