Volleyball: City wrap

STEWARTVILLE — The Rochester Mayo volleyball team is unranked in Class AAA to start the season, but the Spartans now have a win over a ranked team.

Mayo knocked off Stewartville 3-1 in a non-conference match at the Stewartville gym. Stewartville is ranked No. 4 in Class AA to start the season.

Mayo improved to 2-0 overall, and Stewartville is 0-2. Last week the Tigers lost in four sets to John Marshall.

Kate Holtan had 14 kills and Hallie Olson 14 digs to lead Mayo. Emily Rinken had 21 digs for Stewartville.

"Stewie plays great defense and balls did not hit the floor on their side," said Mayo coach Deb Frederick, whose Spartans are three-time defending champs in Section 1AAA.

"We made some errors at unfortunate times to get us behind in the beginning of each set," Frederick said. "Lots to learn from this match."

Century falls despite Fink's 61 digs

FARMINGTON — Rochester Century kept all the games close but fell 3-1 to Farmington in a non-conference volleyball match on Thursday.

We came out slow in game one, but in game two the girls showed the best volleyball I've seen out of them so far this season," said Century coach Brittany Weidman.

Rachel Fink had a career-high 61 digs and Hannah Weidman had 16 kills for the Panthers.

"Both of those athletes passed a high service he percentage which allowed us to get the kills that we did tonight," the coach noted.

"This was a great match for us to build on. Farmington is really tough and I anticipate they're going to have a great season."
