Volleyball: Difficult start for Yellowjackets

WISCONSIN DELLS — The Rochester Community and Technical College volleyball team finished as Division III junior college national champions a year ago.

Saturday and Sunday the Yellowjackets got their 2016 season started. It wasn't easy.

The Yellowjackets dropped three of four matches as they played in the power-packed Battle of the Dells.

"Our goal for this weekend was to learn and compete," RCTC coach Amber Zitzow said. "We go to this invite for tough competition and that is what we came up against. We ended on a high note playing a tight match versus Madison. I was very proud of how the team responded to a tough weekend."

RCTC lost 3-0 to Owens Community College and beat Lake Michigan College 3-1 on Saturday. Sunday, they lost 3-0 to Harper College and 3-1 to Madison College.

• Kenna Bannister led RCTC in its 25-10, 25-13, 25-17 loss to Owens, as she had four of the team's 14 kills.

• RCTC beat Lake Michigan 25-22, 20-25, 26-24, 25-19. Tara Rogers had 14 kills and 11 digs, and Ashley Bichel had 14 kills and three blocks. Callie Hanley added 30 set assists.

• RCTC was never in the match against Harper, losing 25-21, 25-13, 25-14. Rogers had four kills and eight digs and Johanna Bungum had three kills and seven digs.

• Madison beat RCTC 25-21, 24-26, 25-23, 25-22. Rogers and Bichel both had strong matches. Rogers had 13 kills and 10 digs and Bichel 13 kills and three blocks. Hanley added 39 set assists.
