ZUMBROTA — Rochester Mayo opened its season in impressive fashion Thursday night, sweeping Zumbrota-Mazeppa in a non-conference volleyball match 3-0.
The Spartans won the opening game 25-8, then rattled off 25-8 and 25-9 victories to sweep the match.
"It was the opening match of the season for us and we were excited to compete," Mayo coach Deb Frederick said. "You could tell we were a little nervous in the first few points, but they got it out of their system and played well throughout the match."
Kat Maas led the Spartans (1-0) with nine kills. Anna Winter added seven kills and Kate Holtan had six. Nora Holtan added 19 assists and two aces, while Liv Block had four aces.
Mayo plays at Chatfield at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday. Z-M returns to action this weekend at the Rochester Century Invitational.

Hayfield pounces on Austin
HAYFIELD — Austin was no match for Hayfield on Thursday night as it lost 25-20, 25-21, 25-7 in non-conference volleyball.
Maggie Streightiff had five kills, 11 assists and nine digs for the Vikings. Kaila Meyer added 11 assists, six digs and three aces.
