Dean Harrington, age 69, passed away on Feb. 2, 2019, at his home in Plainview.
Dean was born in Rochester to Donald and Avis (Larson) Harrington. He was raised in Plainview, graduated from Plainview High School, and attended the University of Minnesota and St. Cloud State University. He married Sally Standinger on March 29, 1969, and subsequently worked at First National Bank of Plainview, where he retired as president of the bank in 2012.
Dean is survived by his wife, Sally; five children, Mitchell Harrington of Plainview, Cassie Harrington of Plainview, Will (Julie) Harrington of Elgin, Amanda (Dan) Raines of Issaquah, Wash., and David (Amy) Harrington of Plainview; eight grandchildren, Abigail Harrington, Nathan Harrington, Anton Harrington, John Harrington, Alex Harrington, Suzanna Raines, Bryce Raines, and Finn Raines; one great-grandchild, Elliot Kahl; two brothers, Van Harrington of Maiden Rock, Wis., and Kent (Beatrice) Harrington of Plainview.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Don and Avis Harrington; one sister, Gayle Harrington; and one nephew, Noel Reiter.
Dean was an avid reader of philosophy, fiction, poetry, and economics, and he engaged in many pursuits to improve communities and enhance environmental sustainability. Dean sang and played songs on his guitar that he wrote for his grandchildren. He was on many organizations’ boards over the years, such as Land Stewardship Project, Jon Hassler Theater, Rural America Writers’ Center, Experiment in Rural Cooperation (University of Minnesota), Plainview Area History Center, Plainview School Board, and Plainview Area Development Corporation. Before beginning his banking career, Dean worked on a dairy farm and maintained a professional and warm appreciation for agriculture throughout his banking career.
Dean has donated his body to Mayo Clinic for educational purposes. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
As a friend recently wrote, "He’ll be one more bright light added to the night sky and sorely missed here on earth."
