Gary Lynn Swenson, 83, of Spring Valley, died Friday, Nov. 22, 2019, following a lengthy illness with Alzheimer's disease, at Cottagewood Senior Community in Rochester.
Gary was born Nov. 13, 1936, in Spring Valley to Olaf "Ole" and Alice (Medberry) Swenson. He grew up in rural Spring Valley, attended school there, graduating from Spring Valley High School in 1954. Gary was married on Dec. 29, 1960, in Cresco, Iowa, to Diane M. Wendl. Following their marriage, they lived in Rochester for a number of years. They were later divorced.
Gary was employed as an insurance agent, real estate agent and truck driver. Gary was a past member of St. Francis Catholic Church in Rochester and the Fraternal Order of Eagles in Rochester.
He enjoyed playing poker, reading, camping and time spent with family, especially his grandchildren.
Gary is survived by a son and two daughters, Dean (Lisa) Swenson of Dodge Center, Kathleen (Paul) Cernohous of Olathe, Kansas, and Jodi (Keith) Sweatt of Chaska, Minn.; 10 grandchildren, Dean Laganiere, Donovan Laganiere, Bailey (Ben) Haag, Gina Cernohous, Paige Cernohous, Rochelle Hovde, Leo Cernohous, Kyleigh Sweatt, Kaitlyn Sweatt and Kira Sweatt; and a great-grandson, Graham Haag.
Gary was preceded in death by his grand-daughter Cassie, his parents and sister, Janice Jacobson.
A time of visitation for family and friends will be from 5-7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 29, at Griffin-Gray Funeral Home in Stewartville.
Honoring Gary's wishes, there will be no service and a private family burial will be conducted at Frankford Cemetery in rural Spring Valley.
