James “Greg” Gregory Holtz, 70, of Rochester passed away peacefully Sunday, March 3, 2019, at Our Lady of Peace Hospice and Home Care Center in St. Paul, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Greg was born Aug. 18, 1948, to James and Delphine Holtz in Sioux City, Iowa. He moved, along with his family, to Kasson in 1957. He graduated from Kasson-Mantorville High School in 1966. Greg served with the U.S. Army in Germany from September 1967 through September 1970. After his military service, he graduated from Anoka Ramsey Community College with an AA degree, continuing his education and graduating in 1975 with a business degree from Mankato State College.
He started his career as an insurance adjuster with G.A.B. in Fort Dodge, Iowa. In 1977, he moved to Montana, where he worked for Trans America and Allstate Insurance Companies. Greg enjoyed 20 plus years in Montana exploring the state through backpacking, skiing, golfing, canoeing, running and studying the history of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. He returned to Minnesota working for State Farm Insurance in Minneapolis/St. Paul. He retired in 2010 and moved to Rochester, where he resided for the past nine years. He enjoyed retirement playing golf with dear friends, reading and working part-time delivering flowers for Renning’s Florist.
Greg was supported during his last months by his family and many close friends.
He is survived by his parents, James and Delphine Holtz of Rochester; two sisters, Theresa Eversole and Cindy (Mike) Boruff of Kasson; and six nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a niece, Alicia Reeder.
Cremation is being handled by Macken Funeral Home in Rochester. Per Greg’s wishes, there will be no service, and his ashes will be laid to rest in Montana.
