Lois P. Schurman, age 91, of Rochester, died Tuesday, June 4, 2019, at Madonna Towers.

Lois Pearl Van Polen was born on Dec. 31, 1927, in Detroit, to Cornelius and Annabelle (Sim) Van Polen. She attended grade school at Grosspoint Christian School in Detroit, and Maine East High School in Park Ridge, Ill. She graduated from Chicago Christian High School in Chicago. She furthered her education at Mosier Business College in Chicago.

Lois made public profession of her faith on April 1, 1945, in the Des Plaines Christian Reformed Church. On Nov. 29, 1946, she married Henry Schurman at the Des Plaines Christian Reformed Church in Des Plaines, Ill. She was a lifelong member of the Christian Reformed Church. She faithfully attended and was an active member in Des Plaines, Ill., and Grand Haven, Mich. For many years, Lois worked at Nearly New, a thrift shop that benefited the Christian school in Grand Haven. She attended Autumn Ridge Church, when she and her husband, Henry, moved to Rochester in 2003. Due to severe hearing loss, she appreciated Rev. C. John Steer as pastor so much, because she was able to hear and understand his messages.

When living in the Chicago area and in Rochester, she enjoyed the daily newspaper. She would read it cover to cover and even cut out articles that she thought her family would enjoy. Her primary interests were her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Lois enjoyed reading and was always working on a crossword puzzle. She was a lifelong Chicago Cubs and Chicago Bears fan. She was also an avid baker, especially pies. Lois was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

Lois is survived by her children, Diane (Ronald) Schaap of Rochester, and Robert (Paula) Schurman on New Lenox, Ill.; six grandchildren, Stephanie (Michael) Sawyer, Emily (James) Hilleman, Kathleen (Travis) Yager, Jacob (fiancée, Shannon) Schurman, Abigail (Adam) Barr and Nicholas Schurman; and nine great-grandchildren, Colin and Morgan Sawyer, Audrey and Jenna Hilleman, Elise, Ian and Maisie Yager and Everly and Mila Barr. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.
