Maurene May Grunwald, 94, of Blooming Prairie, died Monday, June 10, 2019, surrounded by her family.
She and her twin sister were born at home in Blooming Prairie Township on Dec. 12, 1924, the daughters of Frank and Alma (Eaker) Borchert. She grew up on the Borchert family farm and attended country school next to Trinity Lutheran Church, rural Blooming Prairie.
On June 24, 1947, she married Laurel Grunwald at Trinity Lutheran Church. The couple made their home on the Borchert family farm. Together, they raised hogs, cows, sheep, chickens, ducks, riding horses and work horses. She and her husband were honored and proud to grow the farm and eventually purchase it from her parents. The farm earned the honored distinction of becoming a Century Farm in the 1980s.
Along with farming, she enjoyed gardening, flowers, and attending dances with friends, Eugene and Virginia Motl. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church all of her life. One of the most difficult decisions for Maurene was to move off the farm. Her family made sure she enjoyed many visits back to the farm over the years.
She is survived by daughter, Linda (Mel) Tollefsrud of Rochester; grandchildren, Chad Nelson of Owatonna, Jenny (Hilario Larios Martinez) Nelson of Lake City, Jesse (Joani Vidal) Tollefsrud of Wellington, Colo., and John Tollefsrud of Ft. Collins, Colo.; great-grandson, Owen Tollefsrud; twin sister, Lorraine Clemmensen of Owatonna; and son-in-law, Terry Nelson of Owatonna; and other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Laurel Grunwald (2009); daughter, Diane Nelson (2013); brother, Woodrow Borchert; and two infant sisters.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Thursday at Michaelson Funeral Home in Owatonna. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, June 13, at Michaelson Funeral Home with Rev. Stephanie Wood officiating. Interment will be in the Union Cemetery, rural Blooming Prairie. Memorials are preferred to the donor’s choice.
