Milton G. Bigalk, 81, of Stewartville, died on Monday, Nov. 20, 2017, of natural causes at his home.
Milton George Bigalk was born on Jan. 19, 1936, in Howard County, Iowa, to George and Phillippine (Culver) Bigalk. He grew up on the family farm, attended country school and graduated from Harmony High School in 1954. Milton attended Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa, for a year before entering the Army. He served two separate tours of duty including service overseas in Germany. Following his discharge in 1964 with the rank of sergeant, he returned to Harmony where he was employed at the grain elevator, as a laborer with Bigalk Construction and was a milk route driver for a time with a cousin.
Milton was married on Jan. 1, 1966, at the Highland Prairie Lutheran Church in Highland to Elaine K. Aschim. The couple lived in Harmony for a short time before moving to Rushford for a number of years, where they raised their children and where Milton was manager at the Rushford Elevator. They were later divorced.
Milton was a past member of the Rushford Lutheran Church, Rushford American Legion Post 94 and was an active member of the Rushford Lions. He moved to Sauk Center, Minn., where he was a self-employed salesman until his retirement. He moved to the Stewartvilla Apartments in 2016. He enjoyed playing cards and bingo, collecting coins, gardening and growing his own vegetables and was a natural food advocate. Milton enjoyed time spent with his family, especially his grandchildren.
Milton is survived by his son, Brian (Sandy) of Rochester and his daughter, Brenda Aschim of Stewartville; five grandchildren, Amanda Wagner, Katrina Wagner, Ariel Bigalk, Tyler Bigalk and Michael Bigalk; two great-grandchildren, Lykias and Marius Jones; two brothers, Raymond (Susan) Bigalk of Lime Springs, Iowa, and Mark (Pat) Bigalk of White Bear Lake, Minn.; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother and sister-in-law. Earl and Arlene Bigalk, and an infant sister.
A time of visitation for family and friends will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 25, at Griffin-Gray Funeral Home in Stewartville. A committal service and burial with military graveside honors will take place at 1 p.m. Monday, Nov. 27, at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery in Preston.
