Richard “Dick” Charles Smith, 69, of Hayfield, passed away Friday May 3, 2019, in Blooming Prairie.

Dick was born in Carroll, Iowa, on Dec. 15, 1949, to Paul and Jane (Demurisse) Smith. He graduated from Hayfield High School in 1968. After high school, Dick joined the Army and served from 1969 to 1971 in Germany. He married Sue Westin on Jan. 7, 1971, and they later divorced. He married Arlene McGinley on June 5, 2004, in Hayfield.

Dick worked for Dale Schmeling then later for the City of Hayfield maintenance department. After his retirement of 35 years, he worked for Westfield Township grading roads until his death. He enjoyed many things, including go-karts, tractors, camping, and motorcycles. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and American Legion in Hayfield.

Dick is survived by his wife, Arlene; daughters, Ann (Jeff) Blossom and Sarah Smith, both of Bloomington; stepdaughters, Shelly (Mark) Pritzl of Lake City, and Tracy (Marcus) Mitchell of Red Wing; stepson, Marty (Jami) McGinley of Overland Park, Kan.; sister, Connie Eastman of Goodyear, Ariz.; 12 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents, one brother and three sisters.

A memorial service for Dick will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, May 10, at the First Presbyterian Church, 109 East Main St., Hayfield, MN 55940. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, May 9, at Czaplewski Family Funeral Homes, 501 Second St. NW, Hayfield, MN 55940 and one hour prior to the service at the church. Inurnment will be in Fairview Cemetery in Hayfield with military honors provided by the Hayfield American Legion.
