Rodney Charles Johanns, age 85, of Rochester, passed away Sunday, Oct. 6, 2019, at Cottagewood Senior Communities in Rochester, due to complications of pneumonia.

Rodney was born Sept. 12, 1934, in Mason City, Iowa, to Clarence and Verna (Davis) Johanns. At the age of 4, his mother died and Clarence married Viola Harwick. He grew up in Rochester graduating from Rochester High School and married his high school sweetheart, Alma Boutelle. They were married for 64 years before her death June 4, 2018.

Rodney worked for Dealy Ryan, Hamm's Beer and retired with Coca Cola Bottling Co. He was also a partner in the Rendezvous Bar. Rodney and Alma wintered in Texas for many years.

Rodney, also known by many as Pops, is survived by his children, Michael (Kathryn) Johanns of Kasson, Wayne (Diane) Johanns of Jacksonville, Fla., Julie Gurtner (Noel Luedtke) of Rochester, Judith (John) McGuire of Eyota, Teresa (Larry) Holloway of Rochester, and Daniel (Donna) Johanns of Rochester; grandchildren, Shannon, Tanner, Janna, Jennifer, Sara, Jordan, Morgan, Jacob, Jacqueline, Garrett, Drew, Johanna, Tyler and Courtney; along with many great-grandchildren; and his foreign exchange student, Nils Schulz, from Germany; and his dog, Buddy.

Rodney was preceded in death by his wife, Alma; his parents; and brothers, Lawrence and Gerald.

Judy would like to express her deepest gratitude to the Cottagewood #6 staff for their loving and compassionate care while Pops was there, to Tom and Vicky Giordano for their love and support and watching football and baseball games with him, and to Heartland Hospice for their kind and compassionate care these past couple days.

A private service for Rodney and Alma will be held at a later date.
