Timothy Allan Burton, 70, died peacefully at home on Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2019. He was born Sept. 15, 1948, to William "Frank" and Marlys (Kohn) Burton in Stewartville.
Tim graduated from John Marshall High School in Rochester in 1966 and married Susan (Raatz) Burton Dec. 30, 1967. Tim and Suzie had two sons, Todd Burton and Chad (Angie) Burton. Tim was a Navy veteran during the Vietnam War, serving with VF 143 out of Miramar, Calif.
His entire life was dedicated to veterans. He was the Olmsted County Veterans Service Officer from 1979 to 2005. He served as Commander of the Mayo Chapter 28 of the Disabled American Veterans, Rochester, and Department Commander Disabled American Veterans for the State of Minnesota in 1986. Tim was President of the Minnesota County Veterans Service Officers Association in 2003 and the State of Minnesota's County Service Officer of the Year in 1989. After retirement in 2005, he and Susan moved to Arizona, where Tim continued to work with veterans as a volunteer.
Tim held the post of Exalted Ruler of the Elks Lodge twice. Once in Rochester in 1979 and again in 2009 in Buckeye, Ariz.
Tim is survived by his wife, Susan; his brothers, Gary Burton of Kasson, and Randolph (Barbara) Burton of Rochester; sister, Paulette (Don) Ojanen of Deer River; and sister-in-law, Pam Burton of Rochester.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Marlys; father, Frank; brother, Richard Burton; sister, Pamela Burton and sister-in-law, Dianne Burton.
There will be a celebration of Tim's life in the coming months when he is inurned at the Phoenix VA National Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the veteran's organization of your choice.
