Verna Wharton — Rochester
ROCHESTER — Funeral services for Verna Wharton will be held Tuesday, May 3, at 1 p.m. at Mahn Family Funeral Home, Rochester Chapel. The Rev. Maurice E. Hagen will officiate. Interment will follow at Grandview Memorial Gardens.
Mrs. Wharton, 96, of Rochester, died Thursday April 28, 2011 at Sunrise Cottages in Rochester.
Verna Irene Hanson was born to Nels and Carolina Hanson on Nov. 28, 1914, at Hendricks, Minn.
Raised on a farm near Hendricks, she was baptized on Jan. 15, 1915, at the Blom Prairie Lutheran Brethren Church at Toronto, S.D.
In 1931 she married Melvin Wharton. Verna was a homemaker and, beginning in the 1950s, she worked 20 years for Waters-Conley. In the 1970s she was employed at Massey’s Department Store.
She is survived by a daughter, Beverly A. Stuve of Rochester; six grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; six great-great grandchildren; and a sister, Vivian Johnson, of Rochester.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin, in 1969; a son, Lyle Wharton, in 2007; a grandson Keith Wharton in 2000; six brothers, Howard, Morris, Orean, Lloyd, Eugene, and Burnie Hanson; and two sisters, Marcella Nygard, and Darlene Odell.
Friends may call from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the day of the service at the funeral home. If so desired, memorials may be directed to Sunrise Cottages or Seasons Hospice.
